- educated at the Université de Montréal and Université Laval, where she has taught literature and folklore
- foremost writer of Acadia
- first non-native of France to win the Prix Goncourt

- La Sagouine (1971) (translated as The Slattern) sixteen monologues by the wife of an Acadian fisherman, often performed on stage
- Pélagie---la Charrette (1972) (translated as Pélagie: the Return to a Homeland) the story of a group of Acadians who make their way back to their homeland after the expulsion to Louisiana in the 1750's, recieved the Prix Goncourt
- Par derrière chez mon père (1972)
- Don l'Original (1972) (translated as The Tale of Don l'Original, received the Governor General's Award
